Swansea Fencing Club hosts regular beginner’s classes for those who have always had a desire to fence and for those who are just curious to learn about what fencing is all about.
Each class runs for approximately 10 weeks (1 to 2 hours per session) and is run by an experienced British Fencing Association recognized coach. Throughout the course you will learn the basics including how to attack your opponent, defend yourself, the different weapons and styles in the sport, the rules and how to fence safely and responsibly. The majority of the training is with the Foil weapon.
The Club has a range of equipment for you to use during the classes so you do not need to bring any equipment. You do however need to wear a T-shirt, comfortable jogging trousers (jeans and shorts are not permitted). Most people will use squash shoes, however, as long as they are comfortable, have non-marking soles, grip well and have a rounded heel, they would be suitable.
Each student will have access to the clubs safety gear which must be worn. This will comprise of a fencing jacket, under plastron (females must wear a plastic breast guard), glove and mask.
The cost of the course is £50 for any age which is non-refundable. Included in this price is Social Membership of Welsh Fencing Association which will insure you to fence within Swansea Fencing Club for one year. This is mandatory. Information will be given to you at your first class. You are also required to complete an application form
At the end of the 10 weeks you will be required to join as a full member and encouraged to purchase some basic clothing and equipment. Once you have joined as a full member, you can take out the full membership with the Welsh Fencing Association which is about £30 to £40 per year depending upon age.
We hope that you will be hooked on fencing by the end of the course and want to join the club. Details will be given to you during the classes.
There are a few links to several fencing websites under the Resources section. If you decide to purchase Leon Paul equipment via the club, a 10% discount can be obtained. However, any alterations once the goods are received, will be your responsibility to return or exchange the items. Please feel free to discuss this with a committee member.
Most retailers offer beginner packs that are well priced. Again, if you need any advice, just ask one of your coaches, committee member or an experienced fencer at the club.
